What is Project MENTAT

Project MENTAT is the manifestation of an idea, one as old as warfare and history itself.

Ever since the first paleolithic warrior chief stood atop the wooden palisades ensconsing his crude domain, and gazed upon his realm and what lie beyond it, mankind has asked itself “how strong are my people” and more importantly “how strong are my neighbors?”

This is a question that has beguiled all of the world’s governments, monarchs, generals. It was the driving force behind the Information Revolution, when the first modern superpowers cast off the shackles of Earth’s gravity and placed satellites and cameras into orbit — not to explore the stars, but to gaze beyond their own borders into the realms of their adversaries to tally their spears, tanks and planes.

Project MENTAT is and will be the answer to their millennia-old question — but unlike the hitherto balkanized, pilloried, and gated solutions that have been created solely for use by the world’s stronger governments, MENTAT shall be available for everyone with a checkbook and a connection to the internet.

How Project MENTAT Works

MENTAT leverages the incredibly powerful open-source software Orbat-Mapper — the passion project of a wunderkind Norwegian graduate student — to serve a series of editable databases using NATO standard symbology including the locations and more importantly the ‘structure’ of thousands of military units, all of which will be hosted by Analytica Camillus’ servers. This lofty project, the phantasm of military autists everywhere, will eventually encompass all of the world’s militaries and militant groups.

More than that, eventually, users will be able to track the maneuvers and operations of every active military unit through time, on multiple different terrain maps.

As of today, there are no comparisons or analogs.

Features

The ultimate end-goal of Project MENTAT is to have a comprehensive, fully free database that’s accessible for everyone, everywhere, that encompasses every military and militant organization regardless of security concerns, and is updated on a rolling basis by machine-learning algorithms.

But to blithely describe this as an expensive endeavor would be… understating the problem. The requisite satellite imagery is to feed data (for example, images of airfields to track the individual locations of fighters and aircraft) into machine-learning models and algorithms is prohibitively expensive.

Analytica Camillus has also cultivated a large network of local soldiers and analysts from across the world who actually speak the languages of each respective military and government — and while plenty of them have volunteered to work on MENTAT for free, asking people to risk professional opprobrium (and in some cases execution by their respective governments) solely for the ‘autist’ thrill of the game is… how can we put it, a bit gauche.

As such, we’ve developed this peremptory payment and feature structure. As of September 28th, 2025, only the Individual tier is available — but as the databases are buffed out, pared down, and expanded, the other tiers will come online. Currently, the prices per tier are logarithmic because the labor involved is logarithmic. One infantry regiment might have 3 infantry battalions and an artillery battalion that all fight within a few dozen kilometers of one another. A regiment (or wing) of aircraft might have 3 individual squadrons, each composed of 24 fighters that operate in separate flights or patrols of between two and four aircraft (so that’d roughly translate into potentially 18 sub-units zipping around countries at the speed of sound for each regiment).

As more people subscribe to the company and individual tiers, the price of the enterprise tier will drop until its features are moved into the Company and Individual tiers.

IMPORTANT NOTE:

Each tier (except for the free tier) protected behind a Patreon membership wall, so you’ll have to be logged in to access the links to it here on the Analytica Camillus website.

A Note on Sourcing

How we surmise these orders of battle is quite a tricky matter, especially given many penchants for censorship and various governments’ tendency towards repression. As a rule of thumb, the best sources for the militaries of non-free societies are never on the internet for very long, and drawing attention to them is a very good way to get them deleted, or their creators arrested.

At Analytica Camillus we subscribe to precisely one mandatory rule and philosophy, we’ll share discuss and talk about anything, anything , as long as it doesn’t get the originator of said data shot or arrested.

As such, all of the data in Project MENTAT is and can be independently verified, and if there are questions about the veracity of material, come to us and we’ll show you where and how it was found. But we are not going to do the work of secret police for them and release a compendium of sources (and given that countless thousands of sources were used in the creation of this database, that’s probably for the best).
